A Nigerian researcher working at a leading agricultural research institute in France, Dr. Mubarak Mahmud, has developed a new biological pathway that could help convert nitrogen from the air into natural fertiliser for cereal crops, a breakthrough that could significantly improve global food production.

The innovation focuses on harnessing atmospheric nitrogen and transforming it into a form that plants can utilise, potentially reducing reliance on chemical fertilisers while improving soil health and crop productivity.

Nitrogen is one of the most essential nutrients required for plant growth. However, most cereal crops, such as maize, wheat, and rice, cannot naturally utilise nitrogen from the atmosphere, forcing farmers to depend heavily on synthetic fertilisers.

Mahmud’s work aims to address this challenge by introducing a biological mechanism that enables plants to access nitrogen directly from the air, a process that could improve yields and lower the environmental impact associated with chemical fertiliser use.

Agricultural scientists say the discovery could have major implications for cereal production, particularly in developing countries where the high cost of fertiliser remains a major barrier to food security.
