ADC explains reasons for suspension of Bauchi State chairman

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has attributed the suspension of its Bauchi State chairman, Mallam Hassan Haruna, to alleged anti-party activities.

The acting chairman of the party in the state, Alhaji Mahmood Hassan Tabla, disclosed this on Tuesday during a press briefing at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Secretariat in Bauchi.

Tabla said Haruna was suspended by the chairmen of the party across the 20 local government areas of the state after he allegedly failed to respond to queries issued to him and violated provisions of the party’s constitution.

According to him, the suspended chairman was accused of engaging in activities capable of undermining party unity, including recognising parallel executives within the party’s structures.

He added that the local government executives also accused Haruna of defamation and gross misconduct, leading to the establishment of a disciplinary committee in line with the ADC constitution.

“The chairmen of the ADC in the 20 local government areas of Bauchi State, in the exercise of their constitutional powers, constituted a disciplinary committee and issued a formal query containing allegations against the former state chairman, Mallam Hassan Haruna,” Tabla said.

He noted that rather than respond to the query, Haruna allegedly issued a press statement dated January 18, 2026, and convened a meeting the following day, during which he announced a separate list of 20 local government chairmen for the party.

Tabla further revealed that the local government executives had instituted a suit against Haruna and 20 others at the Bauchi State High Court, which restrained them from parading themselves as ADC executives in the state.

While describing the ADC as a credible opposition platform, the acting chairman pledged to work towards fostering peace, unity, and internal democracy within the party in Bauchi State.
