Ebisan Arayi reflects on childhood beginnings, industry growth

As Nollywood continues to gain global recognition, rising actor Ebisan Arayi is emerging as one of the fresh voices redefining the industry and inspiring a new wave of talent.

Known for his roles in Hey You, Baby Farm, and Perfect Neighbour, Arayi shared insights on what excites him most about the fast-growing Nigerian film industry.

He revealed that his passion for acting started early in life, saying, “The project that made me feel I was meant to be part of the industry happened when I was a child, at the age of 10. I used to be part of Charly Boy’s Kiddies Show for a few seasons.”

“And, you know, Nigerian parents… you must go to school and stay focused. When the show ended, I realized that despite being told to focus on school, I wanted to continue acting. I knew I wanted it even more because of how I was treated and pampered on the show. I thought, ‘Wow, this is what these people go through?’”

The gifted actor also credits his family for inspiring his passion for the craft. 

“My mum has been a big inspiration. Iyabo Lawani, she used to be on TV as the host of the Maggi Family Menu for over 15-20 years, and she is a veteran actress. That motivated me even more,” he said.

Reflecting on the current state of Nollywood, Arayi expressed excitement over the industry’s growing global recognition.

“Many conversations are happening around Nollywood, and from my vantage point, what excites me about the new Nollywood is that the world is now seeing it more than ever. 

“There are many young directors and producers doing fantastic work, and a lot of new talent is emerging. That’s what excites me the most: Nollywood is being recognized globally now.”
