Wale Adenuga dismisses Papa Ajasco actor’s hardship claim as misleading

Veteran filmmaker and Chief Executive Officer of Wale Adenuga Productions, Wale Adenuga, has refuted claims of financial hardship made by actor Abiodun Ayoyinka, popularly known as Papa Ajasco, describing them as “false and misleading.”

Ayoyinka had stirred reactions online after alleging financial difficulties despite his long-standing role in the popular television series ‘Papa Ajasco and Company.’

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Adenuga said he initially viewed the trending video as part of the actor’s comedic expression.

“My first impression when I watched the Papa Ajasco video now trending on the internet and local TV channels was: ‘Okay, so this guy has taken Papa Ajasco comedy into the public space!’ It is all well and good. I am happy for him, as his money-making strategy using social media has apparently worked for him,” he said.

Adenuga, however, expressed concern over what he described as misinformation and emotional reactions trailing the interview, stressing that his response was aimed at preserving the integrity of the brand.

“I want to address the wave of misinformation, emotional commentary, and uninformed public intervention that has followed his recent media interview—not with malice, but in the interest of truth, transparency, and the integrity of a legacy that has entertained millions of Nigerians for decades,” he stated.

He noted that Ayoyinka had a long career in the Lagos State civil service, where he served for over three decades and was a prominent figure in the state’s cultural troupe, gaining recognition during the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu and subsequent governments.

According to Adenuga, the actor only recently retired and often required official clearance from his workplace before participating in film productions.

Describing Ayoyinka as a “versatile actor,” Adenuga said he closely resembles the original Papa Ajasco character created in 1976, adding that their relationship remains cordial.

“He bears the closest resemblance to the cartoon version of the Papa Ajasco character, which I created on my dining table in 1976 during my publishing days. He is very close to me, and there has been no irreconcilable difference between us,” he said.

Adenuga further stated that the production company had supported the actor over the years, including providing him with a car and access to others.

“On the car issue, we once gave him a car — and Pa James as well. He has also used at least five cars, including a Mercedes-Benz, at different times. And to the best of my knowledge, he has a house in Ogun State,” he said.

Adenuga explained that the “Papa Ajasco” brand name is restricted for personal ventures to safeguard its integrity, but actors are allowed to pursue other opportunities with approval.

“Also, he has not been barred from accepting advert jobs. As he himself stated, all that is required is to seek official approval from WAP. This is part of brand protection,” Adenuga said.

Adenuga questioned Ayoyinka’s claim of being broke, citing his long-term service with the Lagos State Government and unaccounted investments and gratuities.

“Now, the question is: why is Abiodun Ayoyinka claiming to be broke? Where are the investments from his over 30 years of meritorious service with the Lagos State Government? What happened to his gratuities?”

Adenuga emphasised that the company pays industry standards and fulfils financial obligations, denying allegations of neglect or exploitation.

“The organisation pays according to industry standards and ensures all financial obligations are fulfilled as and when due. Therefore, any narrative suggesting financial abandonment or exploitation by our organisation is entirely false and misleading,” he said.
