NACA urges Nigerians to celebrate Valentine’s Day responsibly, prioritise HIV prevention

As Nigerians prepare to mark Valentine’s Day, the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) has called on the public to celebrate responsibly by taking proactive steps to prevent HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Dr. Temitope Ilori, Director-General of NACA, made the appeal in a Valentine’s Day message on Wednesday in Abuja, urging individuals to prioritise their health and that of their partners during the season of love. “Let love be guided by responsibility. Knowing your status and protecting yourself and others is a powerful way to show you care,” she said, stressing that the celebrations should not increase vulnerability to HIV.

Dr. Ilori encouraged Nigerians to know their HIV status by getting tested and to encourage their partners to do the same. She highlighted the importance of practising safe sex through the consistent and correct use of condoms, describing it as an essential act of care in relationships. In her message, the NACA boss warned against behaviours that elevate the risk of HIV transmission. These include having multiple sexual partners, engaging in transactional sex, and the excessive use of alcohol or other substances that could impair judgment and compromise decision-making.

She further urged citizens to access HIV prevention, treatment and counselling services at government health facilities nationwide. According to Dr. Ilori, the agency remains committed to expanding access to quality HIV care and support across the country, aligning with Nigeria’s national goal of ending new HIV infections. “Valentine’s Day is a time for connection and affection, but it should also be an opportunity to demonstrate care through responsible choices,” she added, reiterating that personal health and safety are central to meaningful relationships.

Dr. Ilori also reminded Nigerians that additional information on HIV prevention, testing, and treatment is available through NACA’s website and the agency’s toll-free HIV line, 6222, providing easy access to guidance and support for all citizens. By linking celebration with responsibility, NACA’s message underscores the need for heightened awareness and action, ensuring that the pursuit of love does not come at the cost of health. The agency’s call serves as a timely reminder that responsible intimacy is a form of caring, one that protects individuals, partners and the broader community from preventable health risks.
